INTRODUCTION
I have already written about best phones under ₹7000, ₹10000 and ₹15000.
Now it’s the time for the best phones under ₹20000. In this segment, phones often
have flagship features. You cannot buy any of these right now due to the
Lockdown. But the Pre-Bookings and Sales start soon. I would go in descending order.
5. Samsung Galaxy M31 (₹16,856 ≈ ₹16,900)
![]() |
Samsung Galaxy M31 |
This is a phone I suggest to
everyone who is looking for a Samsung Phone under 20000. It comes with a
plastic back and it wouldn’t have been a big problem if it wasn’t that plain. I
actually liked the looks of M30s more. It also has a rear fingerprint scanner
which is fast enough. It has a 6.4” FHD+
sAMOLED Panel with a Teardrop Notch. It is the same as M21 which is not a bad
thing. Even for this price, this has excellent contrast and viewing angles.
This has the Exynos 9611 and honestly, Samsung should give something else at
17k. This is not at all on par with the chipsets in other phones. Though the
performance is good enough for the average user but this can’t handle heavy tasks
well. It gave a score of 191,981 in AnTuTu and 349 Single-Core and 1315 Multi-Core
in Geekbench. But there is 6GB RAM and 64 GB UFS 2.1 storage. It also has a
dedicated SD Card Slot This runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0.
The camera is a 64MP (f/1.8) ISOCELL
GW1 + 8MP Ultra-Wide Lens + 5MP Macro Lens + 5MP Depth Sensor. It has quality
similar to all other 64MP camera phones. This takes great images in daylight
but the low-light performance is not as great as other phones here. Even the
macro sensor is 5MP which is good as in 2MP lenses, the macro shots don’t come
out that sharp. The front camera is 32MP (f/2.0) ISOCELL GD1 which has good
quality but the best thing about it is that 4K recording is available on both
cameras. The battery is a 6000 mAh pack which lasts two days. But again, it has
slow 15W charging and at this price, I won’t ignore it too. It takes about 2hrs
30min for a full charge. At least, they could give support for 25W charging. So
overall it is a decent phone but I suggest that you take a look at other
phones. Also, Samsung phones are going to be now available for pre-booking.

4. Vivo Z1x (₹16,999)

Vivo Z1x |
Though this phone has nothing extraordinary but this doesn’t mean that it is a bad phone. And I also think that this is the most underrated phone of 2019. This comes with a 6.38” sAMOLED Display with teardrop notch. This has excellent contrast and viewing angles. There is a plastic back at the back but it looks pretty because of its gradient. Also, it doesn’t feel cheap. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner which is fast enough even in 2020. Also, there is face unlock which is fast.
This runs the Snapdragon 712 which
is a bit old but can still run all the heavy tasks. There is 6GB RAM along with
64 GB UFS 2.1 storage. It also has a dedicated SD Card Slot. It runs Funtouch OS 9 over Android Pie which
looks a lot like iOS. And updates in Vivo are a lot faster than before. The AnTuTu
score is 215,555 which is better than M31. The Geekbench score is 404 Single-Core
and 1526 Multi-Core.
There is a triple camera with 48MP
(f/1.8) IMX 586 + 8MP Ultra-wide Lens + 2MP Macro Lens. The quality is great,
both in daylight and low-light. There is a 32MP (f/2.0) ISOCELL GD1 front
camera and this provides quality better than some 32MP phones out there. There
is just a minor difference. And I can say that the cameras here are one of the best
in this price range. The battery is 4500 mAh which is on par with the competition
and provides excellent endurance. And there is 22.5W charging which takes about
1hr 40min for a full charge which is decent but not that fast. So it is surely
a good phone that you can buy.

3. Realme 6 Pro (₹17,999)
![]() |
Realme 6 Pro |
Though, Realme 6 was the best under
15k, I can’t say the same about Realme 6 Pro. It comes with a Glass Sandwich
Design with Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides. The look is pretty much like the
older Realmes and it’s up to you if you like it. There is a large 6.6” FHD+ (20:9)
IPS Display with a dual punch-hole on the left. And it is utilized for a
wide-angle lens and not a depth sensor. It also has the 90Hz High Refresh Rate.
But the absence of AMOLED at 18k is a
bummer. You won’t have any major problems with it but AMOLED is simply better
than LCD. It also prevents it from having an in-display fingerprint scanner. But
the side-facing solution is not bad either. It is fast and accurate.
It comes with Snapdragon 720G which
is on par with Snapdragon 730G in many aspects and even better in some. It
scores 281,768 in AnTuTu which is less than 290,722 in Realme 6. In Geekbench,
the Single-Core is 567 and Multi-Core is 1668. Realme 6 scored 508 Single-Core and 1675 Multi-Core. Though the Realme 6 Pro defeated the Realme 6, both were quite similar when it comes to GPU Performance and Realme 6 had the edge in some tests too. But
benchmarks are not everything and Snapdragon 720G offers performance pretty
similar to Helio G90T. There is Realme
UI with Android 10 which is quite better than older versions. There is 6GB RAM
and 64GB storage in the base version which is UFS 2.1. There is a dedicated SD
Card slot too.
The camera is an ISOCELL GW1 64MP
(f/1.8) + 12MP 2x Telephoto Lens + 8MP Wide Angle Lens + 2MP Macro Lens. The
best part is that it has an optical zoom lens that others lack at this price. The
main shooter is the same as Realme 6 but this gives better photos due to the
better ISP of SD720G. The photos come out to be one of the best at this price,
be it broad daylight or low-light. The Nightscape mode works well too. It has
960 fps Super Slow-Motion too. The front camera is a 16MP (f/2.1) IMX 471 along
with an 8MP Wide Angle Lens. The sensor is the same as the flagship OnePlus 8
Pro. The front camera is one of the best in this price range. Also, the
presence of a wide-angle lens is a bonus. I can easily suggest this to camera
lovers.
There is a 4300 mAh Battery which
provides decent endurance but nothing great. But the 30W VOOC charging is one
of the best features of this phone. This fully charges the phone in 1hr 5min and
this is quite a great thing. But one thing to note is that the charger heats a
lot while charging but the phone doesn’t. It is done to probably protect the
battery from degradation. So I can surely suggest this to anyone who wants an
excellent camera in this price range. This has cons but it won’t affect the
user experience at the end.

2. Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (₹16,499)
![]() |
Redmi Note 9 Pro Max |
This phone may not have specs as
great as Realme 6 Pro but I keep it above is mainly due to its lower price tag. This
is a lot more similar to the vanilla Note 9 Pro, but this fixes most of its
cons. There is a Glass Sandwich Design which is the same as Note 9 Pro. But
this seems more durable. But still, I recommend a good back cover. I like its
looks quite a lot but it is your choice. There is a 6.67” FHD+ IPS LCD Display
which is the same as Redmi Note 9 Pro but it seems brighter. The notch design
and placement make it look like Galaxy S20.
But it is LCD and again, I am disappointed. There is no high refresh
rate either. So I don’t like the display that much.
There is Snapdragon 720G which
performs similar to Realme 6 Pro. It is good enough for the light user and even
the heavy user. But you won’t notice this in daily life. It gives 280, 118 in AnTuTu which is about the same as Realme 6 Pro. But again, Redmi Note 8 Pro had the higher AnTuTu score of 279,335. The Geekbench
Score is 569 Single-Core and 1755 Multi-Core which is again higher than Realme
6 Pro. It comes with 6GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.1 Storage in the base model which is
a great thing for 16.5k. There is a Dedicated SD Card Slot too. There is MIUI 11 with Android 10 and it has
ads that can be disabled.
The camera setup is the same as
Redmi Note 8 Pro. It has the ISOCELL GW1 64MP (f/1.9) + 8MP Wide Angle Lens + 5MP
Macro Lens + 2MP Depth Sensor. It provides quality similar to Realme 6 Pro and quality
better than Redmi Note 8 Pro. The photos come out amazing in both daylight and
low-light. But I would have preferred a telephoto lens instead of the depth
sensor. There is Video Pro Mode and 960
fps Slow-Motion which is a great thing. The front camera is 32MP (f/2.0)
ISOCELL GD1 which offers amazing quality in both daylight and low-light. And it
also comes with the night mode. It may beat Realme 6 Pro but it has its Wide-Angle
Lens to fight back. Still, I don’t mind its absence at this price.
The battery is a 5020 mAh Monster
Pack and it is the same as the vanilla Note 9 Pro and would last two days for
the average user. Galaxy M31 may be better but this is not far behind. Also,
the complaint that I had with the Note 9 Pro was the 18W charger in the box. But
this has the super-fast 33W charger which takes 1hr 5min to fully charge this. There
is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that works well. This is an overall
great phone for the price. But I mostly suggest the base variant only.

1. POCO X2 by Xiaomi (₹16,999)
![]() |
POCO X2 by Xiaomi |
Now comes the best phone under
20000. This was the most anticipated phone of 2020 after the silent year from
POCO. This is the best and ticks almost every box. There is a glass Sandwich
Design with Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides. This has quite a unique look. The camera
is placed in a module that is surrounded by a circle that looks pretty. It
has a 6.67” FHD+ IPS LCD Display with a Dual Punch Hole at the right. I am not
happy that it is an IPS Display. But POCO gave a display with 120Hz Refresh
Rate which the premium iPads and ASUS ROG Phone 2 has. It makes gaming
better than others. It also has the Dual Punch-Hole but it there only for a
depth sensor and not a wide-angle lens. Still, I won’t complain much.
There is a Snapdragon 730G which is
quite similar to Snapdragon 720G. It is great for both light tasks and heavy
tasks. The AnTuTu score is 272,229 which is quite similar to Note 9 Pro Max. It
gives 548 Single-Core and 1692 Multi-Core Score in Geekbench. The Snapdragon
720G has an edge when it comes to benchmarks but you can’t notice it in day-to-day
tasks and this even has the 120Hz Refresh Rate. The base model has 6GB RAM and
64GB UFS 2.1 Storage. But this has a Hybrid Slot. So you can use two Dual SIM
and SD Card at the same time. The best part is that it has Android 10 with MIUI
for POCO which doesn’t have ads. And even if you see any, you can easily disable
them.
The rear camera of this phone is
easily the best in this price range. It has a quad-camera with 64MP (f/1.9) IMX
686 + 8MP Ultra-Wide + 2MP Macro Lens + 2MP Depth Sensor. The main camera
provides amazing quality in both daylight and low-light. Though it may not be
as feature-rich as Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, the camera quality here is better. The
wide-angle lens is also better than others. Though the macro lens is just 2MP,
it is the best you can find under 20k. But again, it doesn’t have a telephoto
lens. But there are 960 fps Super Slow Motion. The front camera is a 20MP
(f/2.2) Samsung Sensor with a 2MP Depth Sensor. It has excellent quality,
though the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max may be better. The portraits are excellent and
the depth sensor does make some difference.
The battery is 4500 mAh pack which
may not be as huge as Redmi Note 9 Pro but still provides excellent backup and
would last a day even for the heavy user. The high refresh rate does affect battery life. There is 27W fast charging which charges this in about 1hr 10min which
is fast enough. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that works fast
and is accurate. This is a great phone for gamers and camera lovers. I suggest
all the variants of this phone. The 6+128 GB variant comes for 18k and the
8+256 GB one comes at 21k.
